About

The room is dedicated to Xenophon Kontiadis (1903-1941), Professor of Surgery at the University of Athens, who was killed, along with 70 other patients and medical and nursing staff, on the last day of the Greek-Italian war, at the Zosimaia Academy of Ioannina, while he was operating, by bombs from German planes, which ignored the symbol of the Red Cross. The operating theatre was located in the basement of the School. The bust of Kodiades was sculpted by the great sculptor Thanasis Aparte (Smyrna 1899 – Athens 1972).

In addition, this room exhibits the military sanitary equipment of mobile operating rooms of the Second World War, including the characteristic “Gina” (from the engine), a portable manual electricity generator with the corresponding lamp for lighting the surgical field.
